Gudeg War: Gudeg Mercon vs Mbak Pirang

Mention gudeg, and most people picture a reliably sweet plate. They think of dark jackfruit slow-cooked in palm sugar.

They expect standard krecek—cattle skin crackers drenched in an orange gravy—paired with rich chicken opor and areh (coconut milk stew).

But when you hit the streets of Yogyakarta, where the dish originates, there is more to taste than that familiar look.

The city harbors an aggressive, chili-fueled gudeg scene. Today, we are diving deep into two legendary variations that are incredibly rich in taste.

It is a gudeg showdown: Gudeg Mbak Pirang versus Gudeg Mercon Bu Prih.

Gudeg Mbak Pirang: The Mystery Behind the Blonde

The most catchy part of the name making people curious is Mbak Pirang. It literally translates to “blonde girl.”

In fact, when our Grab car picked us up, the driver immediately asked, “Is the girl really having blonde hair?”

I laughed and said, “I don’t know. All of them wear a hijab.”

For those expecting traditional roots, this is pure comfort food. A plate of rice arrives loaded with that classic, deep-flavored dark jackfruit.

It is paired with tender chicken opor cooked down in savory coconut milk and soft krecek. It satisfies every traditional craving.

The dining space embraces a calm, nostalgic simplicity. Pale turquoise walls create a soothing, retro backdrop that immediately feels like a local home.

Gudeg Mercon Bu Prih: An Explosive Dose of Mercon

Mercon is a local slang word for firecracker. In the case of this legendary stall, mercon refers to the super spicy chili cooked with cattle’s skin.

If you are not sure you can handle the extreme spiciness, you can ask for the chili on the side. That is exactly what I do.

A neat pile of green cassava leaves provides an earthy balance. Finely shredded, tender chicken opor (coconut milk stew) rounds out the plate. While ordering, you can also ask some extra dishes other than the jackfruit, like the tofu that I ordered.

Make sure to order some water, preferably a cold one. This rich, intensely spicy chili can really burn your mouth.

So, who wins this legendary gudeg showdown? The ultimate answer depends entirely on your strategy for the day.
