It was the weekend right before Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration. Road closures around the National Monument (Monas) area made traffic much worse than the usual weekend. Thankfully, Jalan Kebon Sirih was still reasonably accessible for us to reach an unmarked building.
Right on the lobby of the GMP building is Amalgam Coffee. The small coffee shop hides a bigger space behind it for the roastery and restaurant.
I ordered a café latte while browsing their menu. Amalgam serves a wide range of dishes, from fried rice and noodles to pasta and a salmon platter.
The day was still early, so I ordered Eggs Benedict for myself and an omelet for my mom. Our food had just been served when we heard the roaring engines of fighter jets flying past overhead.
Everyone immediately rushed outside, looking up to get a glimpse of the fighter jet formations practicing for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. Not long after, everyone headed back inside, busy with their food and conversation.
My mom and I happily enjoyed our food while the roaring jets passed by every now and then in the background. We continued chatting in the cozy seating area of Amalgam Coffee until my phone rang.
That was our signal to pack up and pick up my son, who was having a great time at Monas. Before leaving, I decided to buy a bag of coffee beans to remind myself of Amalgam Coffee whenever I need a place to work or just chill.
