In front of Yehliu Mushroom Rock

Yehliu Geopark, A Pleasant Surprise

Posted on May 3, 2025May 3, 2025 By Benny

Our visit to Yehliu Geopark was an unexpected delight. Neither of us had ever heard of Yeh Liu Geopark, it wasn’t even a blip on our travel radar. We had booked a day trip to Shifen and Jiufen, two must-visit cities nestled close to each other. Little did we know, Yeh Liu Geopark was also on the itinerary, a serendipitous addition to our day.

Carved by Nature

Perched at the northernmost tip of Taiwan’s main island lies the otherworldly landscape of Yehliu Geopark. Here, the relentless battering of the wind and the ceaseless embrace of the sea have sculpted a truly remarkable terrain. Over millennia, the softer layers of rock yielded to this persistent natural artistry, resulting in the park’s iconic mushroom-like rocks.

The moment we entered Yehliu Geopark, a strong wind buffeted us, a raw reminder of the coastal environment. The chill winter wind seeped through our jackets, its insistent roar filling our ears. To our right, the dramatic results of this relentless collaboration between wind and sea were immediately apparent. Big rocks bore the marks of this elemental power, split into two with deep water-worn grooves through which seawater surged with the relentless energy of the ocean.

The Rocks

It’s undeniable that the majority of visitors making their way to Yehliu Geopark are drawn by the whimsical allure of its mushroom rocks, a testament to nature’s playful artistry. Among these fascinating formations, one stands out with a regal presence: the iconic Queen’s Head. Here, a seemingly endless queue of eager sightseers patiently snakes its way forward, each anticipating their chance to capture a photograph alongside this geological celebrity. Our guide, with a hint of concern in their voice, shared a sobering thought: the very winds that sculpted the Queen’s Head continue their relentless work, slowly eroding its slender neck, raising the possibility that this beloved icon might one day succumb to the persistent forces of nature.

While the magnetic pull of the Queen’s Head is undeniable, venturing beyond the immediate throng reveals a park teeming with other geological marvels, each a testament to nature’s patient sculpting hand. We chose to meander away from the central crowd, knowing that countless other picture-worthy formations awaited discovery. Take, for instance, the charming Heart-Shaped Rock, a perfectly formed emblem of nature’s whimsy that offers a similarly magnificent photo opportunity without the long wait. Beyond these iconic shapes, Yehliu Geopark also showcases wonders like the Ginger Rock, resembling a cluster of solidified ginger roots, and the Sea Candles, slender pillars of rock that stand sentinel against the crashing waves. Each formation, from the delicate Fairy Shoe to the imposing Elephant Rock, tells a silent story of wind, wave, and time, offering a rich tapestry of geological artistry for those willing to explore.

The Stamp Memorabilia

Before you bid farewell to this fascinating landscape, a treat awaits those who cherish the experience of journaling. Make sure to step inside the souvenir shop near the park’s exit. There, amidst the array of souvenirs, you’ll discover a delightful offering: a collection of unique, free stamps. Imagine pressing one of these intricately designed stamps into the crisp pages of your travel journal, each impression serving as a tangible keepsake, a miniature work of art that instantly transports you back to the windswept shores and otherworldly rock formations of Yehliu Geopark. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to preserve the memories of your visit, a personal touch that transforms your journal into a cherished chronicle of your Taiwanese adventure.

Final Thought

As we drive away from Yehliu Geopark, we carried with us not just photographs, but a profound sense of awe at the raw power of nature’s artistry. From the iconic silhouette of the Queen’s Head to the whimsical shapes scattered across the landscape, Yehliu is a testament to the enduring forces that shape our planet. If you ever find yourself on the shores of Taiwan, don’t let this geological wonderland remain a blip on your travel radar. Venture north, embrace the coastal winds, and prepare to be captivated by the unexpected beauty that awaits in Yehliu Geopark – a truly unforgettable surprise.
